 
Aphrodite and Ares, as the Greek Goddess of love and beauty, and the Greek God of war—or more properly, battle frenzy—were lovers, famous for the passion of their affair. The symbolism of their affair was a favorite of Renaissance painters, who took the allegory to mean that love conquers war. Done as a commission.
