The Bronze Age civilization of Crete, contemporary with the mainland Mykenaeans, flourished from roughly the third to first millenia B.C.E. It was the land of Ariadne and the Labyrinth, the Minotaur and the Double Ax. There is scant evidence for war in Minoan civilization, and women seem to have held a high status; and images of the female Divine vastly outnumber the male.
